Beverly Shirkey

OCTRU Medical Statistician

I graduated with a BS in Mathematics (Statistics Option) from the University of Texas at Arlington.  Both my MS and PhD in Biostatistics are from the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston School of Public Health and included not only Biostatistics but strong components of Epidemiology and Ethics.  My thesis topic was “Hierarchical Linear Models for Clinical Trials” and my Dissertation topic was “Misclassification in Ordinal Regression”.

My background includes work as an actuary, working as an assistant project manager of the ALLHAT trial (The Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial, a trial enrolling over 42,000 participants at over 600 clinical sites),  and working at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children’s Hospital and at the Houston Methodist Hospital Research Institute where my work included various projects including Surgeon Specific Reports, the Compendium of Ethical and Methodological Standards for Clinical Trials, as well as typical research projects.

My interests include surgical trials, pragmatic trials, clinical trial design and analysis, graphical methods of displaying results, and prognostic research.

My passion is to be part of a team producing the most ethical, well-designed and conducted research possible.

I joined OCTRU and CSM in June 2016.
